Note: David had died before the first named census taken in 1841 and no details had been found of the names of his parents, when and where he was born. If he had followed the Scottish traditions in naming his children - the eldest son after the paternal grandfather and the second daughter after the paternal grandmother - then one would have expected his parents to have had the Christian names of James and Margaret. Looking at births and baptisms recorded in Perth before 1782, the following entry was noted:OPR Perth 387/5

Perth 5th December 1764 Was Born David Paterson lawfully procreated betwixt David Paterson, merchant and Margaret Whytock his spouse, baptised the 9th by Mr. Troop, Seceder Minister at Perth.

Unfortunately, one cannot assume that this entry is relevant without further research. David would have been aged 35 if he married in 1799 which is not at all impossible though most persons married in their twenties. The connection with a dissenting congregation is interesting but the fact that the father of this David was a merchant is perhaps a little unexpected as “our” David was described as a weaver.
However, if he was 35 at marriage, old age may explain his death prior to his daugther Margaret's marriage.
