Fire Brigade was equipped, for use in
fires in which it was known definitely
that poisonous fumes and gases exist
ed, was, in his opinion, not suitable
for use in the fire at Gow's Building,
Turbot Street, on January 13, the

BRIGADE FUNERAL
FOR EX-FIREMAN
Mr. James Stevenson Garven,
former acting chief officer of
Metropolitan Fire Brigade, will be
given a brigade funeral to-day.
The casket will be carried to the
crematorium on a fire engine, and
will be accompanied by officers
and men from headquarters and
suburban stations.
Mr. Garven, who was 65, died
on Saturday afternoon after a long
illness. He was a member of the
Metropolitan Fire Brigade for
more than 40 years, and before
that was a member of the Glas-
gow Fire Brigade.
For many years Mr. Garven was
officer-in-charge of the first call
machine, and was responsible for
many fine saves. He became act-
ing chief officer in 1942 on the
retirement of Mr. W. Younger,
and held that post until the ap-
pointment of Mr. J. C. Stephens.
He has left a widow and four
children. His funeral is to leave
K. M. Smith's funeral chapel,
Wickham Street, Valley, at 2.30
o'clock..

tion of Transmission of Title to the
